"DA NEIGHBOR'S GOAT," Acrylic Painting. Outsider Folk Art - in a rustic frame.
Chattel House -- These movable wooden houses on the island of Barbados were set on blocks and commonly used by the working class, who took them with them wherever they found work. These homes date back to "Plantation Days." At the time, emancipated Slaves could own a house, but they could not own land. As time went on, when they were able to buy land, they often would attach another chattel house to the back of the first - and sometimes more than two. These charming treasures, deep in the history of my people are full of pride and love. I'm sharing my heritage with you in this series, THE CHATTEL HOUSES OF BIMSHA ... They were part of my exhibit, "Stacey Torres: Living In Color," 2017, at the Art Association of Henry County (Indiana). NOTE: It is my ultimate goal to be able to travel back to Barbados (I have not been since 1967), and spend some time on the island finding my people, and painting the beloved Chattel Houses of Bimsha.
