"LIZZIE MILES" is acrylic on 30 x 24" canvas, unframed, but wired for hanging.
Lizzie Miles (1895-1963) was a fabulous Creole Blues singer during the 1920s and 1930s. Due to illness and other reasons, she stopped performing in 1942, until she was rediscovered in the late 50s. She performed again to a new audience that loved and appreciated her voice, her style, her undying class - until 1959 when she retired for a 2nd and final time. I love Lizzie!
Note: Lizzie's 2nd husband, bandleader, JC Miles, died of Spanish flu in Shreveport, Louisiana on October 19, 1918 while on tour. Lizzie was also stricken with the illness, but survived. A native Hoosier, JC Miles was buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, Indiana. I must look him up.
This is an original, one-of-a-kind painting, signed, and wrapped carefully for shipment to you. I am certain it will be lovely hanging on your favorite wall among your art collection.
by Stacey Torres 2019
As a self taught folk artist, I am passionate about painting landscapes, animals and people of various cultures with an abundance of brilliant color inspired by my Caribbean heritage. The female landscape is my choice of subjects, because of course, I can relate. Watching my mother’s life change on a daily basis as she was dying from Alzheimer’s Disease a few years ago, I picked up my paint brush after a 45 year hiatus, and translated her and my feelings onto canvas, and it remains my therapy today.
When the word, “artist” began to appear behind my name, I embraced my gift, and painted life as I see it. Art is my exercise in emotional expression; a way of holding onto things I cherish; documenting visions, impressions and dreams. Sure, I could write a journal or blog, however, my visions need to be seen. At times, I feel messages from beyond, like small glimpses of my past as ancestral folktales emerge with splashes of color. These primitive images of pleasingly imperfect subjects are bits of me; things I'm compelled to celebrate. The women I paint, are my past, present and ultimate future.
